A recent awards ceremony turned controversial when a video emerged showing several local influencers allegedly behaving inappropriately while the national anthem, Negaraku, was being played.
The influencers did not show respect to the national anthem at an awards ceremony
A viral video circulating online captured a stark moment at the 8TV Cuckoo Starfluencer Awards 2025. In the video initially posted by the influencer, a few local influencers could be seen fooling around when the national anthem, Negaraku, was being played. This behaviour was widely perceived as disrespectful and sparked immediate public outrage.
The video was downloaded then reposted by a netizen into a public Facebook group, where several other netizens expressed outrage at the influencers’ behaviour.

The influencer released an apology statement three days after the incident
In response to the mounting criticism, the influencer has since released an apology statement regarding the incident. He acknowledged that his behaviour was immature and inappropriate given the solemn nature of the moment, and pledged to conduct himself more respectfully at formal and public events moving forward.

According to The Star, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh called for stringent action, condemning the incident and highlighting that the national anthem is a symbol of unity and national pride. He argued that any act which undermines its sanctity should not be taken lightly.
Action can be taken against those who show no respect for the national anthem
Under Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968, all who are present are required to stand at attention as a form of respect towards the national anthem. Failure to do so without any solid reason, or any action that may lower the prestige of the national anthem can be considered as disrespect. An arrest without warrant can be performed upon the individuals who breach this act.
The incident reignited debate on influencer accountability and respect for national symbols
The incident has sparked widespread discussion online, with many social media users debating the level of accountability influencers should have when representing themselves in public events. While some netizens accepted the apology, others called for stronger action to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future.
This is not the first time public figures have faced criticism over conduct during the national anthem, and the case has once again brought attention to the importance of public decorum and respect for national symbols.
