Wagyu is a type of high-quality beef that comes from specific breeds of cattle originally from Japan. The word “Wagyu” literally means “Japanese cow” (“wa” = Japanese, “gyu” = cow).

What makes Wagyu beef special is its rich marbling, the fine layers of fat evenly spread throughout the meat. This gives it a buttery texture, tender bite, and rich, juicy flavor that melts in your mouth. Wagyu is often considered one of the most premium and expensive types of beef in the world.

Creating a more budget friendly option, Kelantan based cattle farm has decided to embark on a new venture, named Kelgyu. Now you may be wondering, what exactly Kelgyu? Straightforward as it is, Kelgyu derives from the words, “Kel (Kelantan) and “Gyu” (Cow).

But this isn’t just about cows roaming a field. This is serious business involving artificial insemination, embryo transfers, and specially designed facilities. The fifth dedicated site for the project is already up and running, complete with state-of-the-art breeding pens.

Datuk Tuan Mohd Saripudin Tuan Ismail, Kelantan’s Executive Councillor for Agriculture, shared that this effort is more than just about meat. It’s about creating a long-term industry, enhancing the quality of local food production, and offering Malaysians a high-quality alternative to imported wagyu.
