A bread manufacturer in Klang has landed itself in hot waters after increasing their potato bun prices by RM0.16. Unfortunately, the increase in price has costed the bakery a whopping RM60,000 fine.

According to local daily, Kosmo!, the company pleaded guilty to profiteering after raising the price of its popular potato bread from RM3.35 to RM3.51. On paper, it may seem like a small amount, but when the profit margin jumped from RM1.89 to RM2.05, the authorities found it to be a significant amount.

According to Kosmo!, the offence took place on 27 May 2024 at the company’s premises in Taman Klang Utama. The company was then charged under Section 14(1) of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

The director, Khu Kim Chai, 67, stood in for the company and admitted guilt. Instead of the maximum RM500,000 fine, the court handed them a RM60,000 penalty, which the company paid immediately.

The prosecution was handled by Muhamad Saiful Saaidin from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), who argued that the price increase was far from reasonable. The company was defended by lawyer Mohd Ridzuan Omar.
