Starting 1 September 2025, drivers heading to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will only get a 10-minute grace period to pick up or drop off passengers.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) announced that it will roll out a trial of its new Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) at Terminal 1’s departure and arrival zones. The system, which uses barrier gates to time vehicles entering and exiting, is designed to reduce congestion and stop drivers from lingering too long at the kerbside.

Trial runs are on-the-go

The trial will run at Terminal 1 from 1 September until 30 November, before being extended to Terminal 2 on 15 September, where it will also be tested until the end of November. During this period, no penalty fees will be imposed, although MAHB has confirmed that fines, possibly up to RM100 for overstaying are being considered once the system is fully enforced.

MAHB explained that the initiative aims to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and make it easier for passengers to access the terminal, especially during peak travel hours. A post on Facebook has also shown new signs already installed at KLIA, highlighting the 10-minute limit and the potential fine for those who overstay.

Preparing for Visit Malaysia Year 2026

“Airports worldwide are adopting smarter kerbside management to reduce congestion and elevate the passenger experience,” said MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani.

“At KLIA, our goal is to create a safer, more efficient, and passenger-friendly environment. The terminal is often travellers’ first and final impression of Malaysia, and we want that to reflect our hospitality and efficiency, particularly as we prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
