The girl and her siblings had been unable to attend school, as it was too far from home and beyond what the family could afford. On top of that, their mother fell behind on rent for four months, and the landlord had no choice but to evict them.

Determined to support her family, the teenager started washing cars, earning about RM80 a week. She uses the money to buy food and other essentials for her mother and siblings.

Comes to the rescue

Social activist Abbe Hae, who shared the story on Facebook, said he was moved by the girl’s determination. Despite being financially stretched himself, he and his team helped the family find a new rented unit closer to the children’s school.
