In a tragic incident just after midnight today, two men were shot and killed outside a shopping mall in Cheras, marking the second deadly shooting in Kuala Lumpur in less than a week.

According to early reports, the victims were walking toward a car parked inside the mall compound along Jalan Loke Yew when they were ambushed. A group of suspects, believed to be wearing helmets, reportedly ran toward them and opened fire multiple times before fleeing the scene.

2 shootings in less than 4 days

Cheras police have been contacted, and investigations are ongoing. This comes just four days after another fatal shooting in Brickfields. Last Friday night, three men were attacked while dining with friends at a restaurant along Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

In that case, two suspects on a motorcycle approached the group around 10:50pm and fired multiple shots. One of the men died at the scene from gunshot wounds and was later sent to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for a post-mortem. The other two victims are currently receiving treatment, one is in serious condition, while the other sustained minor injuries.

Both cases are being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and authorities have yet to confirm if the two incidents are connected.

Gun laws in Malaysia

Malaysia has some of the strictest gun laws in the region. Civilians are generally not allowed to own firearms unless they obtain special permission, which is rarely granted and usually limited to purposes like sports or personal protection under very tight regulations.

Despite these laws, recent shootings have sparked public concern over how firearms are still ending up in the wrong hands. Social media and community groups have seen a rise in calls for stricter enforcement, better policing of illegal weapons, and more advanced crime prevention efforts.

Many Malaysians are urging the government to take firm action—not just in solving these crimes, but in reviewing loopholes in gun control policies to help prevent future tragedies. The growing sentiment is clear: stricter regulations and proactive prevention measures are urgently needed to keep communities safe.
