The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have confirmed that the three Malaysians arrested in Thailand with 87kg of crystal methamphetamine (syabu) are all from Sarawak.
According to Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, the three men were travelling by train from Bangkok to Narathiwat when they were arrested by Thai authorities in Hat Yai.
Drugs found hidden in bags
Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said Thai railway officers detained the suspects after discovering the drugs concealed inside their luggage and backpacks.
He added that Thai police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) have shared preliminary information about the case with Malaysian authorities.
Malaysia and Thailand continue to maintain close cooperation in cross-border drug investigations, and PDRM will allow Thai authorities to carry out their investigations in accordance with Thai law.
RM4.3 million drug bust
According to Thai media reports, the operation was carried out jointly by Hat Yai Police’s narcotics unit, railway police, tourist police and the ONCB Region 9.
Authorities seized 87kg of syabu, estimated to be worth RM4.3 million.
Preliminary investigations indicate the drugs were believed to be destined for a drug trafficking syndicate in Malaysia. The three suspects were also reportedly promised RM8,000 each to smuggle the drugs to their intended destination.
Thai authorities are continuing their investigation into the case.
