Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently shared the story of Muhammad Afif Ikhwan, who travelled with his grandmother through an oil palm plantation just for a chance to see him during a programme at Felda Palong Timur, Segamat.

Grandmother rode through oil palm plantation to fulfil grandson’s dream

According to Anwar, Afif’s grandmother, Rosimah Mohammad, rode a motorcycle through plantation roads so her grandson could meet the Prime Minister in person. During the event, Afif managed to make his way through the crowd and reached out to shake Anwar’s hand before being invited onto the stage.

“What may appear to us as a small dream was, in fact, big enough to move his grandmother to ride a motorcycle through an oil palm plantation to fulfil her grandson’s wish,” Anwar wrote in a Facebook post.

Touched by the encounter, Anwar said he later sent someone to visit Afif and present him with a bicycle as a special surprise. He admitted he never expected their brief meeting to mean so much to the young boy.

“I never expected that such a brief moment would carry such great meaning for Afif,” he said.

‘Never lose our compassion’

Reflecting on the experience, Anwar said that no matter how busy leaders are with running the country and dealing with major challenges, compassion and humanity should never be forgotten.

He also expressed hope that the memorable encounter would inspire Afif to continue studying hard and one day contribute to his family, community and the nation.
