A Kelantan police station chief has been suspended from duty while authorities investigate allegations that he accepted a RM500 bribe from a foreign national.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the 41-year-old police sergeant major was suspended to allow a thorough investigation by the Police Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS), alongside a probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
“This process is part of the investigation procedure carried out by our side. Further action will only be decided after everything is completed,” he said after attending the Kelantan police monthly assembly.
The officer was previously remanded for seven days by the Magistrate’s Court to assist investigations into claims that he received the money in exchange for not taking action against a foreigner.
Magistrate Amirul Asyraf Abdul Rashid granted the remand order until July 26 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. The foreign national involved was reported to be a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cardholder who operated a scrap metal business.
Mohd Yusoff said further action against the officer would be determined after JIPS completes its investigation.
