Mydin has instructed all its outlets to immediately stop selling a Jalur Gemilang-themed tudung after a customer raised concerns that the design featured a national flag star with fewer than the required 14 points.
The issue came to light after a Threads user spotted the product at Mydin Subang Jaya and questioned how a design featuring Malaysia’s national flag could have been sold despite the apparent mistake.
Netizens question product approval
Earlier, a user on Threads questioned the decision to put the tudung on sale, saying that the design could be viewed as disrespectful towards Malaysia’s national symbol.
He questioned how such a design passed through checks before being produced and sold to the public.
“Even if the design was created using AI, where was the due diligence before mass production?” he wrote.
Supplier printing error
Responding to the complaint, Mydin said it takes the matter seriously and has directed all branches to stop selling the affected product immediately.
The retailer explained that the issue was caused by a printing error from the supplier and that action would be taken to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
“We take this matter seriously and have instructed all branches to immediately stop selling the product in question.
“We apologise for the oversight and appreciate the feedback from the gentleman,” Mydin said.
Online backlash over national symbol error
The post, uploaded around 2pm, quickly gained attention, with many users asking how the product had entered Mydin’s inventory.
Some also called for stronger action against the retailer, comparing the issue to a recent incident involving a factory in Johor that displayed the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
