Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City has emerged as Malaysia’s highest-ranked hospital in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking, scoring a commanding 89.50%.
The Subang Jaya-based hospital was followed closely by Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur, which scored 88.36%, while Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) took third place with 87.83%. Notably, this leading trio represents the only three institutions in Malaysia prestigious enough to break into Newsweek’s definitive Global Top 250 ledger.
This localized concentration of medical excellence also highlights a fascinating geographic phenomenon: two of the nation’s top three elite hospitals (SMC and SJMC) operate right next to each other within the suburban hub of Subang Jaya, fueling a friendly but intense clinical rivalry that is driving up healthcare standards nationwide.
Private hospitals dominate Malaysia’s top 10
Further down the list, corporate healthcare networks showcase their massive regional footprint. Prince Court Medical Centre came in fourth with a score of 84.53%, followed closely by Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur at 84.24%. Both institutions, alongside Gleneagles, form part of the dominant IHH Healthcare Malaysia network, which claims four of the top ten positions across the country.
Holding its ground amidst these multi-million dollar private corporate giants, Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) stood out as the highest-ranked public hospital on the list, placing sixth nationally with a score of 82.59%, proving that Malaysia’s public medical framework can comfortably compete alongside premier luxury care.
Penang’s growing reputation as a medical tourism destination also featured prominently. Island Hospital in George Town ranked seventh at 80.07%, followed by Pantai Hospital Ampang in eighth place with 79.99%. Gleneagles Hospital Penang secured the ninth spot with 79.71%, while KPJ Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital rounded out the competitive top 10 at 79.52%.
Sunway Medical Centre solidifies specialized standing
Sunway Medical Centre’s No. 1 position in the overall Malaysia ranking comes alongside historic milestones in Newsweek’s specialized hospital rankings. In the global World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027 ranking, the hospital clinched the No. 1 spot in Malaysia for Paediatrics, while also receiving high-tier international recognition for its Neurology and Oncology capabilities.
This clinical breakthrough aligns with SMC’s aggressive physical expansion. The opening of Tower F, the hospital’s dedicated 216-bed Children’s Tower has significantly bolstered its specialized ecosystem. Built entirely around child and family centered care, the facility integrates complex pediatric subspecialties under one roof, including dedicated pediatric hematology and oncology care. This is further complemented by the country’s first 24-hour private Children’s Walk-in & Emergency Department.
By consistently holding the No. 1 spot in Malaysia across overall rankings for consecutive years, these achievements highlight a broader shift in the country’s medical landscape: a transition from regional baseline compliance to true global leadership, driven by heavy private infrastructure investment and robust public sector resilience.
