Frustrated by complaints about the government-backed TuJu navigation app, a Malaysian IT veteran has developed his own alternative that drivers can access for free without downloading anything or creating an account.

Called Lapan, the browser-based navigation platform was developed by Alan Chung, who shared details of the project on Facebook. The tool is available at lapan-malaysia.com and can be accessed through a mobile phone or computer browser.

Unlike conventional navigation apps, Lapan does not require users to install software from an app store, making it a convenient option for drivers looking for another way to plan their journeys.

2D and 3D maps, alternative routes and toll estimates

With more than 20 years of experience in the IT industry, Chung designed Lapan with several features to help motorists navigate Malaysian roads. Users can switch between 2D and 3D map views, check recommended routes and explore alternative journeys. The platform also incorporates real-time traffic information provided by TomTom to help drivers assess congestion and possible delays.

Another useful feature is its manual toll calculator. Drivers can select their entry and exit toll plazas to obtain an estimated toll fee for their journey.

Designed with user privacy in mind

Lapan also aims to offer greater privacy by keeping users’ location coordinates and travel profiles relatively anonymous, unlike commercial navigation platforms that continuously track users’ locations. Its browser-based format means motorists can access the service without going through the usual app installation process.

With complaints about TuJu prompting public discussion, Lapan offers drivers another navigation option that combines route planning, traffic updates and toll estimates in one free web platform.
