The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) yesterday recorded statements from two influencers to assist in investigating a video posted on social media that was alleged to have insulted and disrespected the national anthem.

In a statement, MCMC said that during the recording of statements at its headquarters in Cyberjaya, a mobile phone and a SIM card were also confiscated to aid the investigation.

“MCMC will not compromise with any party that insults or belittles the national anthem, in line with Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968, which stipulates that every citizen has the duty to respect the national anthem.”

The statement also said that MCMC will invoke Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) to investigate the case from the perspective of improper use of network facilities or services. If found guilty, offenders face a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.

MCMC reminded the public to always respect the national anthem as a sign of loyalty and love for the country, and to avoid any actions that may be perceived as disrespectful towards it.

Influencer publicly apologised for his behaviour when the national anthem was played

According to reports, one of the influencers, who is also a singer, caused public outrage during the playing of the national anthem at an awards ceremony by taking out a mobile phone to film the expressions of surrounding artists while joking around during the recording.

The influencer involved responded on Facebook, expressing deep regret for the attention and concern caused by what was described as an unintentional act.

“Since I started my career, this is the first time I’ve witnessed such a powerful moment where everyone – regardless of status, TV platform, influencer, or artist – sang the national anthem together at an awards ceremony.

“I took out my phone to record this moment simply to share the joy, with no intention of being disrespectful. My unintentional act has drawn attention and concern, for which I sincerely apologise.”

He added that he had fully cooperated with MCMC in giving his statement and would comply with any punishment imposed, stressing that he did not wish to waste public resources.

“I have always maintained a patriotic spirit and deeply love this land. I appreciate everyone’s criticism and advice, and from now on, I will treat every national anthem performance with greater solemnity. Finally, I sincerely thank everyone for their tolerance and understanding.”
