Popular massage chain, HealthLand, has announced a temporary closure for several branches in a social media post, leaving many customers who have signed packages feeling frustrated and confused.

No reopening date has been provided, and all existing massage reservations have been cancelled with immediate effect.

According to the statement, the sudden decision was driven by the need to meet legal compliance requirements.

Customers who have signed packages have nowhere to use them now

Several frustrated customers have come forward to share that the packages they have signed with the now-closed branches cannot be used at the remaining opened outlets. HealthLand has announced a validity extension of five years for the package subscribers, however it is uncertain when the company will be back operating as normal.

One customer claimed that they could not use their package since April, and even got blocked by the company’s Facebook page, thus leaving them in the dark.

A discussion has been going on in subreddit r/malaysia on the sudden closure announcement

Through the Reddit comments, it is suggested that HealthLand has two types of management for their branches: Group A: directly under the company, and Group B: under third party (franchise). The outlets that are affected by the abrupt closure are those directly under the company. The outlets that are still running are those managed by franchisees.

One Reddit comment said that the company is facing financial troubles as one of the company’s directors was rumoured to have taken the money and ran off.

Financial issues have allegedly been going on for some time

In April this year, a Facebook reel showing a group of alleged masseurs holding a protest went viral. Several comments claimed that the well-known massage chain has been holding off their salary for months.

The alleged masseurs were holding up signs that said, “Therapist protest, did not receive salary”.

A Facebook user commented that the company owed her more than RM7,000 in wages. When she complained to Department of Labour under the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA), no action was taken.
More than one person has complained that the company has not paid their wages.

Closure announcement removed – leaving even more questions than answers

As of the time of writing, HealthLand has removed the closure announcement from all their social media profiles. This action has sparked even more questions from customers who have signed packages with them.
