Passengers on board Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad’s (KTMB) Shuttle Timuran train experienced a Malaysia Day celebration like no other, as the carriage was transformed into a moving concert hall featuring a live orchestra performance, the first of its kind in the country.

Turns KTMB train into a moving concert hall

A viral video of the performance, credited to Pn. Siti Hazura Ibrahim, shows a young male conductor, wearing a head covering, confidently leading the orchestra inside a train coach filled with student musicians playing brass and wind instruments. The lively melodies echoed through the carriage, with many passengers recording the moment on their phones.

The unique performance was presented by the SMACH Wind Orchestra (SWO) from Sekolah Menengah Sains Machang, Kelantan, as part of the Keretapi Sarong Pasir Mas programme. The initiative aimed to celebrate Malaysia Day with a creative blend of culture, youth talent, and community spirit while promoting rail travel as a unifying platform.

Railways become a platform for unity and culture

Malaysia Day, celebrated annually on 16 September, marks the formation of Malaysia in 1963. This year’s celebrations across the nation have highlighted themes of unity, diversity, and creativity, with KTMB’s orchestra-on-train initiative standing out as one of the most memorable highlights.

With this milestone event, KTMB has not only made history but also demonstrated how railways can serve as more than just a mode of transportation, and become instead a stage that connects people, culture, and national pride.
