A 19-year-old Malaysian man was arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) the Macau International Airport for attempting to smuggle cannabis buds worth an estimated MOP9 million (~RM4.7 million).
Drugs were to be smuggled from Bangkok to Hong Kong
PJ spokesman Ho Wai Lok said that the Malaysian man had been recruited by a drug-trafficking syndicate to move the drugs from Bangkok to Hong Kong, with Macau serving as a transit point. His route took him from Bangkok to South Korea before landing in Macau yesterday afternoon, where PJ officers intercepted him as he collected his luggage.
Based on gathered intelligence, officers suspected someone on the South Korea–Macau flight was carrying drugs. A search of the suspect’s suitcase uncovered 16 bags of cannabis buds weighing 8.9 kilograms in total.
The 19yo was promised RM5,000 for successfully smuggling the cannabis
Investigations revealed that the man was promised almost MOP9,500 (~RM5,000) if he successfully delivered the drugs to Hong Kong.
PJ confirmed they are now tracing the source of the cannabis and other individuals linked to the smuggling attempt. The suspect will be handed over to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further questioning on a drug trafficking charge.
