Monash University is making its biggest move yet in Southeast Asia, deepening Australia’s ties with ASEAN through a massive investment in Malaysia. The university is teaming up with TRX City to develop a new Monash University Malaysia campus right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, a project valued at RM2.8 billion (about $1 billion AUD).

Announcing the partnership, Monash Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering was joined by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Malaysia’s Higher Education Minister, Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

Set to open in 2032, the new campus will be designed to meet the growing demand for a Monash education in the region, with space for 22,500 students and 1,700 staff beyond 2040.

The university says it’s working closely with both the Australian and Malaysian governments to bring the project to life, expanding its world-class research and education footprint across the Indo-Pacific.
Prime Minister Albanese called the project a win-win for both nations.

“It’s also a chance to deepen connections across our region, and that’s exactly what this investment delivers. Students will now be able to learn from one of Australia’s top universities right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.”
