In terms of enforcement, the authorities took 2,306 legal actions against offenders in 2022, followed by 1,989 cases in 2023, 1,589 in 2024, and 508 cases recorded up to June 2025.

These statistics were provided in Loke’s written parliamentary reply to Wan Razali Wan Nor (PN–Kuantan), who had asked about road accident cases involving drunk drivers and the corresponding legal actions taken since 2022.

Enhanced enforcement and awareness campaigns to curb driving under the influence

Loke added that the Transport Ministry, in collaboration with the Home Ministry and police, continues to strengthen awareness campaigns and enforcement operations nationwide. Initiatives such as the SAFER awareness campaign and public service announcements across social and mass media have been rolled out, with over 600 awareness programmes conducted to date.

He also highlighted that the amendments to the Road Transport Act (RTA), effective October 23, 2020, impose heavier penalties on offenders – including 10 to 20 years’ imprisonment, fines ranging from RM50,000 to RM150,000, and driving disqualification for up to 20 years, depending on the severity of the offence.
