6 live gibbons were rescued at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 after airport officers discovered an alleged wildlife smuggling attempt before a flight’s departure.

Discovered inside a passenger’s luggage during a routine security screening at KLIA Terminal 1
According to KL International Airport Facebook Post, Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel made the discovery after spotting suspicious images while screening checked baggage. The alert prompted an immediate response involving airport personnel, airline partners, and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN).

Authorities quickly identified the passenger linked to the luggage and managed to stop the animals from being transported out of the country.
The six gibbons were safely recovered and handed over to PERHILITAN for further assessment and care.
Protecting wildlife is a shared responsibility
Malaysia Airports said the incident highlighted the importance of cooperation between security personnel, airlines, and enforcement agencies in tackling wildlife crimes.
The airport operator also reminded the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious wildlife related activities, stressing that collective action plays an important role in disrupting illegal trafficking networks.
