An expat from China on a business trip to Kuala Lumpur has gone viral after confronting hotel staff over the absence of the China flag from a breakfast restaurant display, only for netizens to point out that he had misunderstood the purpose of the decorations.

Chinese man questions Malaysia hotel over missing China flag
The incident happened at a hotel in Malaysia, where the man noticed dozens of national flags displayed around the restaurant, including those of Norway, Mexico, Argentina and Germany.
However, he became upset after seeing that the Chinese flag was missing. Believing China had been intentionally left out, the tourist approached a hotel staff member and questioned why the flag was not displayed.
“If you want to earn money from Chinese customers, then you should first hang our flag,” he said.
The man then asked the staff member to explain why there was no Chinese flag, while the employee appeared unsure and tried to check the situation. He continued insisting that the hotel should display China’s national flag if it wanted to attract Chinese visitors.

Online users point out the display was For World Cup teams, not every country
The video quickly spread online, with many viewers noticing a key detail, the flags were not meant to represent every nation in the world.
Instead, the display was part of a FIFA World Cup-themed decoration featuring the 48 national teams that qualified for the tournament. Since China’s national football team did not qualify for the World Cup, its flag was not included.
Some netizens also pointed out that Malaysia’s own flag was missing from the display, further showing that the decorations were based on football qualification rather than national representation.

“Didn’t he notice we don’t even have our own country flag on it? Should we figure out what’s going on first?”

“”If I were the employee, I would respond to him by asking if China’s football team had qualified for the World Cup.”
While some felt there was nothing wrong with the tourist wanting to see his country represented, others said the situation could have been avoided with a little more understanding of the display’s theme.
The viral moment has since become a reminder to check the context before jumping to conclusions.
