Lim’s new three-star rank was officially conferred during a ceremony on Monday, 23 June, at Wisma Pertahanan, Kuala Lumpur, officiated by Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar.

ATM, in a statement to Harian Metro, shared that the promotion is a reflection of its merit-based approach and strong commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

“This promotion highlights that opportunities within the armed forces are accessible and grounded in merit and service excellence.
We hope this achievement inspires more interest among all ethnic groups to pursue a career in this noble profession,” the statement read.

Proud to serve Malaysia for over 4 decades

Lim started his early education at St Francis Primary School (1973–1978), before moving on to St Francis Secondary School, where he studied until 1983. Just two years later, he began his military career by enrolling in the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK, under the 25th Regular Commission Intake (TJT 25).

He was officially commissioned into the Royal Ranger Regiment in 1986 and has served Malaysia with dedication for over four decades.

Representing the Chinese and Baba Nyonya Communities with pride

Reflecting on his long service, Lim told English daily, New Straits Times that he’s proud to represent both the Chinese Malaysian and Baba Peranakan community.

“I have served the country for 41 years. It is a testimony that if one works hard and sacrifices for the country, one can surely succeed,” he said.
“There is no greater honour than to serve our beloved country with my fellow countrymen and women.”

A Career built on dedication and knowledge

Throughout his military service, Lim has held several key leadership roles, including:

  • Chief Instructor at the Army Combat Training Centre (PULADA)
  • Commander of the 31st Infantry Brigade
  • Army Inspector General
  • Chief of Staff, Western Field Command Headquarters

He is also an alumnus of the Australian Army Command and Staff College, and holds Master’s degrees from both Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the University of Canberra.

In addition to his military training, Lim studied in South Korea and Spain, and is fluent in Korean, a rare skill even among senior officers.

A Message to Malaysia’s Youth

When asked for some word of advice to younger Malaysians considering a future in the armed forces, Lim said:

“It is a noble profession. The camaraderie and unity we build regardless of race is priceless.
We form lifelong bonds, face danger together, and find strength in shared challenges and esprit de corps.”

Datuk Johnny Lim’s journey is not just a personal achievement, but a powerful reminder that Malaysia’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths, especially when it comes to serving and protecting the nation.
