17-year-old Amir is no ordinary teen. With his mother working in Penang and no father figure present, he takes care of his four younger siblings in Kedah. Desperate to earn money for food and gas, Amir went door to door asking for small jobs.

That is when he met Zuhdi, a lorry driver in Sungai Petani. Amir stood outside Zuhdi’s home in the rain, offering to do any kind of work in exchange for a little pay. He assured Zuhdi that he was not there to beg and insisted on working first before accepting any money from Zuhdi.

Zuhdi said he did not know what task to give at first. He was caught off guard. After discussing with his wife and feeling sympathy, they agreed to let Amir to clean the yard and wash the car. Once Amir finished, Zuhdi invited him inside to rest and handed him his payment.

Zuhdi said that Amir was immensely grateful for the pay and kept expressing his thanks for hiring him.

“His presence felt like a test for me. To either help someone in need or walk away. I am grateful I was able to ease his burden even just a little.”

Amir is a Muslim convert and a former tahfiz student. He is also the eldest of five siblings. Since he has no vehicle, he borrowed a friend’s motorcycle just to search for jobs. Many people turned him away due to his young age or appearance.

Zuhdi had no intention of posting their encounter online but later decided it might help Amir find work. He was right. A secondhand clothing store manager saw the story and offered Amir a job the next day. Amir is now working there.

Zuhdi has been helping others for years. He regularly collects donations to buy food for orphans and people without homes. Through one simple act of kindness, he gave a determined teenager a chance to keep moving forward.
