An eight-year-old pupil from the Special Education Integrated Programme (PPKI) at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Meru, Klang, has died, believed to be due to an Influenza A infection.

North Klang district police chief ACP S. Vijaya Rao said the police received a report about the incident just before dawn.

“The victim, a special needs student, was confirmed dead at around 4.30 a.m. Investigations revealed that he had been infected with Influenza A, and tests showed that all of his family members were also positive for the same virus,” he told Bernama yesterday.

Vijaya Rao added that the Ministry of Health has taken preventive actions, including conducting medical examinations on family members and monitoring the area to curb further spread of the infection.

He said the case has been classified as a sudden death.

Approximately 6,000 students nationwide down with influenza

About 6,000 students nationwide have been infected with the influenza virus, leading to the temporary closure of several schools based on recommendations from their respective District Health Offices (PKD).

Education director-general Dr. Mohd Azam Ahmad said the Ministry of Education (KPM) is working closely with the Ministry of Health (KKM) to monitor the situation and will follow any directive to close schools to ensure the safety of students and staff, Kosmo! Online reported.

He did not disclose the exact number of schools affected by the closures.

“We have instructed officers from the Examination Board to be on standby as the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations are scheduled to begin on November 3.

“So far, about 6,000 students have been confirmed to be infected with influenza. The cases are scattered across several states rather than concentrated in a single area,” he said.
