LOTUSS Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a unit of Thai-listed CP Axtra Public Company Limited, has agreed to acquire a 100% stake in The Food Purveyor Sdn Bhd for RM1.66 billion (THB13.48 billion). The Food Purveyor operates Village Grocer and several other supermarket brands in Malaysia.
The move comes as CP Axtra — controlled by Dhanin Chearavanont and his family’s Charoen Pokphand Group — looks to strengthen its regional presence, with the Bangkok-based retailer targeting further expansion across Southeast Asia.
As reported by The Malaysian Reserve, CP Axtra said the acquisition reflects its continued focus on strategic investments in high-growth international markets.
The Food Purveyor currently manages 50 outlets nationwide under the Village Grocer, BIG., BSC Fine Foods, OTK and The Food Merchant banners.
CP Axtra’s presence in Malaysia will expand from 70 Lotus’s stores to over 120 retailers in total
With Lotus’s existing 70 outlets in Malaysia, the deal will expand CP Axtra’s local network to more than 120 stores, while also enabling its entry into the premium retail segment through The Food Purveyor’s brand portfolio.
The company said Lotus’s brings extensive expertise in retail operations and the management of supermarket and hypermarket networks, while The Food Purveyor is recognised for its strength in the premium grocery segment.
Completion of the transaction is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, pending approvals from the relevant regulatory authorities.
CP Axtra operates wholesale chain Makro and retail brand Lotus’s across 11 countries. Lotus’s Malaysia launched its first three outlets in 2021 in Kepong, Penang e-Gate and Desa Tebrau. The Food Purveyor was incorporated in 2017, building on a legacy that dates back to 1997.
