The aftermath of Christmas Eve celebrations in Bukit Bintang has drawn public attention, not for the festivities, but for the mess left behind. Bukit Bintang, a popular hub for nightlife and festive events, was left strewn with rubbish following Christmas Eve celebrations.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has expressed his concern over the situation after photos showing discarded cups, bottles, and plastic bags circulating online. He urged the public to act responsibly and uphold Malaysia’s image.
No excuse in the 21st century
Commenting on the incident, Nga described the behaviour as unacceptable in today’s society and the scene as “shameful”, stressing that enforcement actions are necessary when rules are violated.
“There is no excuse for littering in public spaces. It is already 21st century, please take responsibility and don’t embarrass Malaysia,” he said.

DBKL steps up cleanup efforts
In response to the littering, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) conducted immediate cleanup operations, with workers clearing the streets and restoring order to the area.
“Festive celebrations are understandable, but improper waste disposal by some continues to harm the city’s cleanliness and image,” DBKL noted.

Cleanliness is a shared responsibility
The city authority reminded residents and visitors that maintaining public spaces is a shared responsibility. Citizens were encouraged to utilize the available rubbish bins and exercise mindfulness, as individual actions play a significant role in keeping Kuala Lumpur clean and welcoming.
