A Malaysian home baker was unexpectedly reminded of the deep emotional connections tied to her pineapple tarts when a grieving man rang her doorbell late at night, searching not for comfort, but for a taste of his late wife’s favorite memory.
Grieving husband goes searching for late wife’s favourite pineapple tarts
The baker, Jessy Tee, who shared the story through a heartfelt post on Facebook, recounted the moment when the doorbell rang well at night. She had been watching television alone when she noticed a man standing politely outside her front gate. He was a middle-aged gentleman. Soft-spoken and visibly hesitant, he asked Jessy if she’s a baker.
Startled by the unannounced visit and unable to see clearly due to her parked car, Jessy slowly walked out from her house and the man told her that she could just stay in, if she’s afraid for her safety.
“Is it okay if we have a little chat? I just want to ask if you’re the lady that sells pineapple tarts.”, asked the man. To which Jessy replied yes, following up by asking how he had found her.
Upon knowing that he had found the baker, his eyes started welling with tears, sharing that he had a faint recollection of her house as her pineapple tarts were his wife’s absolute favourite. The man then shared that his wife had passed away recently and he wanted to cherish every bit of memory he had with her.

She was resilient and fought well
Sharing a little about his wife, the man mentioned that when the wife was diagnosed with an illness, she remained resilient and fought hard. Unfortunately, due to the treatments she was receiving, it has caused her to not have an appetite. Her only saving grace was Jessy’s pineapple tarts.
“My wife always mentioned that she didn’t have any appetite and the only thing she could eat to regain some of her appetite, were your pineapple tarts. She frequently mentioned how your pineapple tarts were the best”, said the man.
As soon as Jessy heard the man’s story, she recalled the woman he was talking about. While she hasn’t met her in person, she would occasionally speak to her online and the woman would also praise Jessy for her delectable pineapple tarts. Occasionally, she would even arrange delivery services to pick up her order. Jessy told the man that she faintly remembers her, and was very sorry to hear of her passing.
The man later made a touching request for two jars of pineapple tarts to offer at his wife’s resting place and even offered to pay immediately or purchase any available tarts on hand. However, Jessy didn’t have any and told him to come back the next day if he’d like and she would bake fresh ones for him.
Upon hearing that Jessy would bake some for his late wife, the man thanked her profusely and slowly left. Watching him leave, Jessy couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness.
“Sometimes, a handmade pastry isn’t just about taste, it’s a way to carry on a memory. It’s his promise to his wife. It’s the trace she left behind. It’s love. It’s the part of their story that was never fully told.”
A kind gesture, in hopes of offering some sense of comfort to the grieving husband
The following day, Jessy prepared the pineapple tarts, and included two homemade banana cakes in the package, an unspoken gesture of comfort to the man and his family.

“In that moment, I realised that even a small pineapple tart can hold a world of longing and love.”
In a world often driven by routine and commerce, this encounter served as a quiet but powerful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can carry profound meaning, and that food, when made with heart, can connect people across moments, emotions, and even in unavoidable partings.
