A Malaysian couple has gone viral after placing QR codes on their wedding tables, encouraging guests to chip in to their “honeymoon fund.” What was meant to be a cheeky, light-hearted gesture seems to have backfired online.

According to Sin Chew Daily, a guest who attended the wedding shared photos of the table setup, which featured a small card reading, “Scan here, let the couple travel farther”, along with a QR code for cash transfer.

Guest says it feels like “begging”

The guest who posted the photos said the gesture felt more like modern begging than a wedding custom. They also noted that, traditionally, red packets are handed to the hosts’ family, as a form of blessing and to cover expenses that the banquet may cost.

“Even though it’s optional, it looks a bit desperate. I hope this doesn’t become a wedding trend,” the guest commented.

Netizens’ reactions

The post soon gained attention online, with mixed opinions from netizens. Some said the guest was overreacting and that it’s up to each person whether to contribute.

Meanwhile, others agreed with the guest’s take saying the message on the card sounded inappropriate. They suggested that maybe write something like “for guests who didn’t bring cash” to replace the original wording, so it looks more polite.

“Giving a cash gift at a wedding banquet is customary, but crowdfunding a honeymoon fund… feels a bit awkward.”

“If it doesn’t feel right, just decline the invitation — simply don’t attend.”

“Even though we live in a digital age, not everything needs to involve a QR code and risk offending esteemed guests…”
