A 29-year-old woman who reportedly managed to escape a house fire in Kota Kinabalu early this morning ran back into the burning home after realising her grandmother and uncle were still trapped inside.

The decision ended in tragedy, with all three dying in the fire.

Fire broke out in the early hours

The fire broke out at around 1am in Kampung Dalap, Menggatal, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

A spokesperson for the Lintas Fire and Rescue Station, Nor Shazaliyana, said 13 firefighters were dispatched after receiving the emergency call and arrived at the scene in less than 10 minutes.

The fire involved a two-storey semi-permanent house measuring around 144 sq m, which was almost completely destroyed.

Three found dead inside

After bringing the fire under control, firefighters entered the house and discovered the bodies of three victims. They were identified as Rubinyadot, 67, her son Azman, 50, and her granddaughter Nurul Aisatin, 29. (transliterated)

A 34-year-old man, believed to be the 29-year-old’s husband, also suffered burn injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

She went back in to save them

According to villagers, the 29-year-old woman had initially managed to escape the burning house. However, after realising that her grandmother and uncle were still trapped inside, she reportedly made the heartbreaking decision to turn back and try to rescue them.

She ultimately became trapped inside the burning house together with the two family members.
