Despite being diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer during his final year of university, Afiq refused to give up on his dream of graduating.

For Muhammad Afiq Mohd Hairul Fahmy, receiving recognition for completing his degree was a meaningful milestone, especially since he was diagnosed with the illness during his final year of studies. Despite requiring oxygen support, Afiq was determined to attend the 26th UC TATI Convocation Ceremony in Kemaman.
His father, Royal Malaysian Navy senior officer Captain Ts Mohd Hairul Fahmy Yob, said the journey was challenging because Afiq needed suitable transport and close monitoring throughout the trip. The family travelled by ambulance, taking two days to reach Kemaman, with a stop in Banting, Selangor, along the way.

His father said attending the convocation was Afiq’s own wish, and the family was determined to make it happen despite the long journey and his medical condition. They even considered requesting an air ambulance to get him to the ceremony, but doctors advised against flying because of his health.
Afiq completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology with Business Management (Honours) and received the Aegrotat Special Award, presented by UC TATI Vice-Chancellor Dato’ Ir. Kamaluddin Abd Rashid and Rector Prof. Ir. Dr. Hairul Azhar Abdul Rashid.
For Afiq and his family, being able to attend the ceremony together made the occasion especially meaningful, marking his academic achievement despite the serious health challenges he continues to face.

Afiq’s story has inspired others, reminding people that education remains valuable regardless of their circumstances, while family support can provide strength during life’s most difficult moments.
His journey serves as a powerful reminder that even when faced with seemingly overwhelming challenges, determination and perseverance can help us continue pursuing our dreams. Nothing is stopping you.
