A recent arrest at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has once again highlighted the need for tourists to remain cautious when arranging rides from major hubs and drew attention to the dangers posed by unlicensed transport operators.

On 4 Oct 2025, a 59-year-old man was detained by Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers at KLIA Terminal 2. The man, who had allegedly been offering the illegal passenger transport services, was caught attempting to solicit six Belgian tourists for a trip to a hotel in Kuala Lumpur city centre in his Toyota Vellfire, quoting a fare of RM225, which is well above e-hailing rates.

According to Azlin Borhan, the director of Selangor JPJ, the arrest was the result of weeks of monitoring and intelligence gathering. The vehicle and driver were both seized for further investigation. Although the driver held a valid license and owned the vehicle, he was operating without the necessary commercial transport permits.

“Operating an illegal taxi service is a a serious offence under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, carrying penalties of up to RM50,000 in fines, five years in prison, or both,”

Not the first time unscrupulous drivers try to make a quick buck from tourists

This is not an isolated incident. The case follows another earlier this year in which two female Chinese tourists were charged RM800 by an unlicensed driver after initially being quoted only RM60. Such cases reveal the vulnerability of travellers, especially foreigners to exploitative practices by unauthorised operators.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of using regulated services to ensure safety, price transparency, and legal accountability. As Malaysia remains a key destination for international travellers, maintaining trust in its transportation systems is essential.

Travel smart by using official services

The public, especially tourists are urged to remain vigilant at all times. Always book transportation through official counters or licensed e-hailing platforms to avoid overcharging, ensure personal safety, and support fair practices within the transport industry.
