In medical emergencies, time does not pause for fear or hope. Each passing minute carries weight, and sometimes even swift action is not enough.

Kuan Chee Heng, fondly known as Uncle Kentang is no stranger to Malaysians, for his kindness and ability to help the underprivileged. Just recently, the man has shared a sobering experience which involved a dialysis patient who passed away while waiting for an ambulance, representing a moment that reflects the fragile line between urgency and loss.
Renowned for his long-standing work in providing free emergency ambulance services, Uncle Kentang recounted that he received a call from a distressed family while having his brunch at Puchong. Prior to calling him, the patient’s family had first contacted official emergency services.

Without hesitation, he drove his own ambulance to the patient’s residence at Kenanga Point. However, when he arrived, the silence was telling no other ambulance had reached the scene.
When efforts are not enough
“We rushed to the 11th floor, but we arrived too late. I told the wife that her husband had passed away,” he said.
Approximately 15 minutes later, another ambulance arrived and likewise found no signs of life. The Ministry of Health was subsequently contacted to carry out the necessary official procedures.

Reflecting on the incident, Uncle Kentang acknowledged the painful reality of emergency response work: not every life can be saved.
Despite experience, speed, and commitment, there are moments when responders arrive only to bear witness to loss. It is a burden that comes quietly, yet leaves a lasting weight.
“We did our best, but our best does not guarantee success. Disappointment happens, and that’s part of the process. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose,” he stated.
Voices that followed the story
As his story spreads online, it drew an outpouring of public response.
“We can’t win all the time. You did your very best — destiny has called.”

“Sometimes, time itself is the challenge. When the moment comes, it is time to go. May his soul rest in peace.”

“You are a good man, handling your work with great dedication, carrying a responsibility that was not easy to bear. May he be blessed. Aamiin.”
