A 28-year-old Malaysian woman from Penang has passed away in Perth, Australia after police alleged she suffered extensive injuries during an assault several days before her death, leaving behind three young children aged 3, 5 and 7.
Tan Kah Ming was found unresponsive at a residence on Taree Street in St James at around 8.30pm on 26 August. She was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Western Australia Police allege that 38-year-old Younis Qambari caused the injuries that ultimately led to Tan’s death during an assault several days earlier.
Police have alleged that the incident occurred in the context of a family and domestic relationship. Qambari has since been charged with murder and remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear in court again on 16 September.
Three children left behind
Tan was a mother of three, with her children aged 3, 5 and 7.
Western Australia Premier Roger Cook said the children were present during the incident, describing the circumstances as horrific.
Tan’s twin sister has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support the three children following the tragedy. The family had reportedly noticed injuries on Tan’s body about three months earlier and contacted Perth Police because they were concerned about her safety.
The fundraising page described Tan as a caring and hardworking member of the community who touched many lives through her kindness and warmth.
As of 10 September, the campaign had raised around AUD58,261 (approximately RM171,000). The money will go towards the children’s immediate living expenses, childcare, education and daily necessities, while helping provide some financial stability during this difficult period.
Tan was originally from Penang and reportedly completed her secondary education at a school in Butterworth.
