At 71 years old, most people would be slowing down, but not Zakaria Abdul Wahab, better known online as “Atok Grab.” The senior citizen continues working as a food delivery rider to support his family, proving that age is no barrier when it comes to earning an honest living.

Zakaria first joined Grab during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021 and has remained active on the platform ever since. According to him, the delivery job suits him because of its flexible and straightforward system.
Speaking to Harian Metro, Zakaria shared that the work is manageable regardless of age.

“This Grab system is easy regardless of age, whether young or old like me. You just accept orders and deliver,” he said.
Despite his age, Zakaria continues riding daily due to ongoing family responsibilities, especially after his 39-year-old eldest son suffered a stroke around nine months ago. His son was previously the family’s main breadwinner and also worked as a Grab rider.
“With rising living costs, staying at home is not possible,” he shared. “I still have a wife and children to support, and now I’m also helping to pay for my son’s treatment.”
Life’s full of challenges
Life on the road has not been easy for the elderly rider either. A few years ago, Zakaria survived a serious accident involving a 10-wheel lorry, which left his motorcycle heavily damaged. Even so, he continues making deliveries using an old motorbike, working based on weather conditions and daily demand.
On good days, he says he can complete up to 20 orders and earn over RM100, including tips, though he admits he no longer has the energy to work from morning until night.
For Zakaria, there is no shame in working hard as long as the job is honest.
“If the work is good, just do it. Put aside the feeling of shame,” he said, while also encouraging younger Malaysians to stay open-minded when it comes to employment opportunities.
He also hopes that assistance for elderly workers can be improved and made easier to access, especially for senior citizens still trying to support their families.
Zakaria’s story previously went viral online, with many Malaysians praising his resilience, determination, and dedication to his family even at 71 years old.
