An 86-year-old man was allegedly attacked by his 62-year-old neighbour after returning home from breakfast, leaving him with a fractured left leg and injuries to his left hand.
The incident happened at around 9am on 23 August in a wooden house area behind the Air Itam Market in Penang.
Victim was about to open his door
According to initial investigations, the elderly man was reportedly about to enter his home when the suspect allegedly rode a motorcycle into him. The 62-year-old neighbour then allegedly used a metal rod to repeatedly hit the elderly man.
The victim was left lying on the ground in pain while his family waited for medical assistance, reportedly afraid that moving him could worsen his injuries.
His family members used an umbrella to shield him from the sun while waiting for paramedics to arrive. He was later given initial treatment before being taken to Penang General Hospital.
Suspect stayed near the scene
Northeast District Police chief ACP Abdul Rozak said the suspect and victim are neighbours.
Initial investigations suggest the incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding. Police received a public report at around 9.55am and arrested the suspect shortly afterwards.
A metal rod believed to have been used in the attack was also recovered from the suspect’s home.
Interestingly, the suspect reportedly did not flee the scene and remained nearby until police arrived.
Police investigating mental health concerns
Police said the suspect was known to officers as someone who frequently visited the police station to make reports, including claims that someone had placed a “curse” on him.
When asked whether the suspect may have mental health issues, police said this has not been determined and further investigations are ongoing.
The suspect will be brought to court tomorrow for a remand application.
The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon.
