Usually, it’s parents telling their children to put their phones away. But one Malaysian family decided to turn the tables after realising their dad was spending a little too much time scrolling through TikTok.

Instead of taking his phone away, they came up with a more wholesome solution, giving him a colouring book to keep him occupied.

From TikTok scrolling to colouring

In a Threads post shared by user aimanariffinnn on Sept 1, the father can be seen sitting comfortably with a colouring book on his lap, carefully filling in the pages.

The family joked that they had given him the colouring book to “cure” his TikTok addiction and reduce his screen time.

The idea apparently worked a little too well.

In a follow-up video, the proud dad can be seen showing his artwork to the family while flipping through his completed pages.

The user jokingly asked netizens to leave some encouraging words, saying he hoped his father would “recover quickly” before becoming addicted to colouring instead.

Netizens share their own stories

The light-hearted family intervention quickly resonated with netizens, with many sharing how they had also tried getting their parents or grandparents to spend less time on their phones.

One commenter, shared that they had also given their 72-year-old mother a colouring book to reduce her screen time, and she eventually took part in a colouring competition for seniors and won third place.

Another user, who said they were a doctor working with elderly patients, advised others to be patient with their older family members instead of scolding them.

It looks like the family’s plan may have worked a little too well. From TikTok scrolling to proudly showing off his latest artwork, dad now has a new addiction to worry about.
