Former prime minister Najib Razak has been granted a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board, chaired by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.
However, the house arrest arrangement comes with conditions.
What are the conditions?
Najib must pay the reduced RM50 million fine and comply with all conditions attached to the conditional pardon.
The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said the pardon will be automatically revoked if he fails to comply with any of the conditions. If that happens, Najib must immediately return to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
The authorities have not publicly detailed the specific day-to-day restrictions attached to his house arrest, so details such as movement limits or electronic monitoring have not been officially confirmed.
Najib, 73, has been serving a reduced six-year sentence at Kajang Prison after the Pardons Board cut his original 12-year sentence in February 2024. His RM210 million fine was also reduced to RM50 million. He was jailed in August 2022 after the Federal Court dismissed his final appeal in the SRC International case.
In December 2025, Najib was convicted in a separate 1MDB-related case involving abuse of power and money laundering involving more than RM2 billion. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined RM11.38 billion, and is appealing the conviction.
