A Form Two student allegedly took RM749 in canteen takings from a boarding school in Jasin after climbing over the counter and grabbing the cash left beside the cash register.
The incident happened at around 9.30pm on Tuesday (Sept 22), according to the canteen operator, Nur Liyana Abdul Khalid, who has been running the school canteen since 2023. She said her staff noticed that the day’s takings, collected between around 2pm and 5pm, were missing.
After checking the CCTV footage, they allegedly spotted a male student wearing a grey traditional Malay outfit, black trousers and a songkok climbing onto the counter before taking the money.
Initially claimed he only took RM5
When questioned, the student initially claimed that he had only taken RM5. However, after being questioned several times, he eventually admitted to taking the full RM749 shown in the CCTV footage, Nur Liyana said.
Her staff then asked the student to retrieve the money from his hostel room. However, only RM718 was returned, with the student allegedly saying that he had already used the remaining RM31 to repay a debt to a friend.
A staff member who was on duty that night subsequently lodged a police report, and police are now investigating the case.
Nur Liyana said there had been several previous incidents involving missing money at the canteen since she started operating it, but she had not taken action previously due to a lack of evidence. This time, however, she decided to report the matter, saying she did not expect such an incident to happen at a school that places emphasis on religious education.
She also expressed disappointment with how the school handled the situation, claiming that the school had not contacted the canteen operator or discussed the matter with them.
“At the very least, they should have contacted us and discussed how to resolve the matter properly, including calling the student’s parents,” she said.
Jasin district police chief Supt Lee Robert confirmed that a report had been lodged and said investigations are ongoing.
