Ever wanted to see real Egyptian mummies up close? Malaysians may soon get the chance without travelling overseas, as Sarawak is bringing an ancient Egypt exhibition to Kuching in July 2027.

The exhibition, titled Egyptian Mummies: Journey Towards Immortality, will be held at the Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) for six months. Visitors can expect to see 110 artefacts from Italy’s National Archaeological Museum of Florence, including actual human remains and objects dating back more than 5,000 years.
Malaysia’s first Ancient Egypt touring exhibition
According to Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, this will be the first international touring exhibition focused on Ancient Egypt to be held in Malaysia. He announced the showcase during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN), later explaining that the project reflects the Sarawak Museum Department’s growing efforts to work with museums and cultural institutions around the world.
Abdul Karim also hopes the collaboration will open doors for more international exhibitions, giving Sarawak access to collections from museums overseas in the coming years.

The six-month run was planned partly because transporting historical artefacts across countries is a major undertaking. Abdul Karim said bringing the collection to Sarawak for just a month would not make the effort worthwhile.
While the department has yet to estimate how many visitors the exhibition could attract, preparations are reportedly progressing well. The showcase is also expected to add another attraction for tourists visiting Sarawak during the 2027 SEA Games period.
