A 53-year-old single mother from Penang who raised her son alone for 20 years is now seeking RM250,000 for a bone marrow transplant after being diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

Liew Siew Kee has been relying on blood transfusions around twice a week to keep her condition stable. After her sisters were found to be unsuitable donors, doctors managed to find a matching donor through a donor-matching system. However, the transplant and follow-up medical care will cost an estimated RM250,000, a sum that she and her son cannot afford on their own.
Raised her son alone after husband’s death
Liew’s husband passed away 20 years ago when their only son, Yong Tian, was just five years old. She worked in a garment factory before spending more than a decade selling kway teow soup at a coffee shop, earning around RM2,500 a month to support the family.
Now 25, Yong Tian works as a delivery rider, earning between RM1,400 and RM2,300 monthly. He is doing his best to support his mother and help with her medical expenses. Liew hopes to undergo the transplant so she can recover and continue spending time with her son.

Charity foundation seeks public support
One Hope Charity chairman Datuk Chai Chiew Hoong said the foundation had assessed the family’s situation and agreed to help raise RM250,000 for the transplant and follow-up treatment.
The family has appointed the foundation to manage the fundraising and collect donations on Liew’s behalf. Those who wish to help can donate through One Hope Charity’s official website.
