From Sepang to Perlis, Muhammad Zahirul Hakim Bin Zali bravely rode his motorcycle alone for 8 hours, carrying his study essentials in just a bucket and a backpack – for one purpose only: to report as a new Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Technology (Robotics and Automation Technology) student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Technology (FKTE), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).

Travelling 8 hours on motorcycle to save money

Since his diploma days, the PLUS Highway has been like a “second home” to him. He used to use buses and ETS (Electric Train Service), but the high travel costs – up to RM100 one way – pushed Zahirul to find a more cost-effective solution.

Thus begins Zahirul’s journey with his beloved motorcycle – where the cost of each trip was successfully lowered to RM30, but it also taught him the true essence of patience, discipline, and courage on the road as he pursued his degree.

Zahirul did not want to burden his parents

Zahirul never wanted to trouble his parents. Being the eldest of six siblings, he understood that his family also had to provide for his younger siblings. Therefore, he chose the most economical way to continue his studies without adding financial burden to his family.

At first, his father, Mr. Zali, was worried about giving permission. Who would willingly let their beloved child ride alone for hours across such long distances? But Zahirul proved himself to be a responsible rider: he didn’t race recklessly, didn’t break the rules, always stayed in the correct lane, and took care of both his own safety and that of other road users.

That determination and courage have finally brought him to UniMAP, the place where he will gain knowledge and build his future. He is living proof that with determination, perseverance, and dedication, no distance is too far to reach.
