The conferment of a PhD upon Dr. Shamyl Shalyzad stands as a significant milestone shaped by remarkable perseverance. His academic success did not come through a conventional path, but through a journey marked by service, unexpected hardship, and unwavering strength.
After completing his Master’s degree under the Defense Scholarship Program, where he represented the Malaysian Army in Australia, he returned home prepared to resume duty. However, his plans were suddenly altered when he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
The years that followed brought numerous medical challenges, including frequent hospital visits and physical limitations. Yet, instead of yielding to these difficulties, he chose to confront them with dignity and purpose.
Turning challenges into meaningful progress
In the face of uncertainty, Dr. Shamyl made the difficult decision to temporarily step back from military service. This period became one of deep reflection, allowing him to dedicate time to personal growth and meaningful pursuits. He strengthened his bonds with loved ones, contributed actively to non-profit initiatives, and continued expanding his intellectual interests through reading and writing.
