The Karipap Pusing produced by inmates in Kajang prison is gaining attention online and is especially popular for its flaky, layered pastry and generous fillings, with mutton being one of the most sought-after flavours.

The products are sold at designated prison sales galleries as part of an initiative that allows inmates to gain vocational skills while contributing to structured rehabilitation programmes.

Due to strong demand, the curry puffs often sell out quickly, adding to their growing reputation among visitors and regular buyers.

Little-known fact

The buzz around Kajang Prison’s karipap pusing grew after a Threads user asked whether visitors need an appointment to enter the prison compound to buy the popular curry puffs.

The question quickly went viral after the Prisons Department replied in a humorous tone, saying the public can simply walk in and inform the guard post that they are heading to Prismart Kajang Prison or the My Pride Sales Gallery, where inmate-made products like curry puffs, batik, songket and frozen food are sold.

The playful response amused many online users and further boosted interest in the curry puffs, which are said to sell out quickly almost every day.

One user replied humorously, joking that visiting the Kajang Prison now seems more about buying the famous mutton curry puffs than visiting inmates.

One even suggested that spend “two or three years inside Kajang Prison” to learn the secret recipe behind the famous curry puffs.
