A five-day-old baby girl was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZ II) in Kota Bharu, where doctors made a concerning discovery during a routine urine screening.
The newborn tested positive for amphetamine and benzodiazepines during a urine test conducted on August 6.
Baby believed to have been exposed before birth
According to Harian Metro, the baby was believed to have been exposed to the substances while still in the womb.
Following the hospital’s report, police arrested the baby’s 30-year-old mother to assist with investigations.
A urine test on the mother also returned positive for benzodiazepines.
Mother investigated under two laws
Police said the unemployed woman has no previous criminal record.
The case is being investigated by the Kota Bharu District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJND) under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, relating to alleged child abuse, neglect or abandonment, as well as Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
