According to The Star, the suspect, who had his face covered with a mask, walked into the shop and immediately threw chili powder into the face of one of the employees. The sudden and unexpected move was clearly meant to distract the staff and create chaos.

With the workers momentarily stunned, the man pulled out a machete and smashed the display glass. He quickly grabbed several pieces of gold jewelery and attempted to flee the scene. However, things didn’t go according to plan.

Chili powder didn’t do its job

As he tried to make his escape, several members of the public who witnessed the commotion sprang into action. With help from the local police, they managed to chase the suspect down and successfully apprehend him before he could get away.

Langkawi district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari, confirmed that the man was arrested on the same night. Preliminary investigations estimate the stolen jewelery to be worth around RM50,000.

The case is now being investigated under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code, which cover robbery and armed robbery involving the use of weapons or causing injury.

Although no one was seriously hurt, the incident has left many locals shaken. The use of chili powder as a distraction tactic is not only dangerous but could have caused serious harm, especially if it had come into contact with the victim’s eyes.
