A road accident on the North-South Expressway has led police to uncover a suspected RM6 million cannabis haul, after the driver allegedly abandoned his overturned vehicle and fled the scene.
The incident happened at around 6pm yesterday at KM48.8 of the north-southbound stretch near Kota Setar, Kedah. The driver was reportedly behind the wheel of a Toyota Wish when he crashed into a Toyota Hilux ahead of him, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Instead of staying at the scene, the driver allegedly got out and fled, crossing the road beside the expressway before reportedly leaving on a motorcycle. When police inspected the abandoned Toyota Wish, they found four suitcases in the boot.
Each suitcase reportedly contained 30 packets of suspected cannabis, bringing the total to 120 packets weighing around 72kg, with an estimated street value of nearly RM6 million.
Driver allegedly has previous SOSMA conviction
Police believe the driver is a local man who has a previous conviction under Section 28J of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA).
Police are now searching for the suspect and investigating whether the drugs were smuggled into Malaysia from a neighbouring country.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the case. He said investigators are looking into several angles, including tracing possible links between the suspect and a drug trafficking network operating in the neighbouring country.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which concerns drug trafficking.
