Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has passed away at the age of 100.
She passed away at 9.20am today (Sept 28) at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur, according to a notice.
Born on July 12, 1926, in Klang, Selangor, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah was among the pioneering Malay women to pursue a career in medicine.
She graduated as a medical doctor from the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, in Singapore, in 1955 before joining the government health service. She later became the first woman Medical Officer in Kedah’s Maternal and Child Health Department in 1965, followed by becoming the state’s first female Maternal and Child Health Officer in 1974.
Beyond her medical career, she was also widely known as the wife of Malaysia’s former prime minister. She married Mahathir in 1956 and accompanied him during his two periods as prime minister.
Tun Dr Siti Hasmah turned 100 in July this year, marking a century of life and public service.
