Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼), who worked closely with Hui and affectionately called him “Dad,” shared in a tearful interview that she had learned about his health struggles beforehand and canceled a promotional trip to Beijing just to visit him in the hospital.
Hui’s career spanned over 50 years. He was part of the very first batch of TVB’s artist training class and appeared in countless classic dramas, including Second Life Pursuit of Murder, Casino Tycoon, The Years of Glory, The Legendary Tycoon, My盛Lady, and Line Walker. His performances were consistently praised, earning him numerous awards and the admiration of audiences.

Hui also came from a distinguished family background. His family, based in Guangzhou, was historically prominent in business and culture. His ancestor Xu Baiting was one of the city’s leading salt merchants, his great-grandfather Xu Yingqi was the godson of Empress Dowager Cixi, and his grandaunt Xu Guangping was the wife of modern Chinese writer Lu Xun. Growing up, Xu enjoyed a privileged childhood and even joked that his “toys” included fragrant sachets and jade Ruyi scepters.
In his early career, Hui was often spotted driving a Benz to work, earning him the nickname “Benz Xiong,” a name fans fondly remember him by.
