While most of us would think twice about stepping into murky floodwater, three police officers in Johor didn’t hesitate. A video of them wading barefoot through a flooded road to clear a clogged drain has been making the rounds online and Malaysians can’t stop praising them.

The unexpected scene unfolded in the South Johor Bahru district, where flash floods were causing major traffic jams. Turns out, the real issue was a blocked drain. Instead of waiting for the relevant authorities to show up, the three officers decided to take matters into their own hands, literally.

Not part of the job description to clean drains

Sergeant Ivon Yi, Sergeant Celestine, and Sergeant Mohamad Noiz Ganda were on duty with the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Unit when they came across the flooded road. Seeing that it will potentially cause a massive jam on the roads, they stepped up immediately to fix the problem.

The video posted on Facebook by the South Johor Bahru Police District shows one of the officers removing debris and unclogging the drain with their bare hands. And just like that, the water started flowing again, easing the traffic situation.

While drain cleaning obviously isn’t part of a traffic cop’s job, these officers didn’t think twice about stepping up. Their quick thinking and willingness to get their hands dirty (literally) probably prevented more vehicles from getting stuck or damaged.

Social media users were quick to show their appreciation. Many praised the officers for going the extra mile, calling them true public servants. One user commented, “Salute to this policeman. But the person responsible for this job, do they get paid for doing nothing?”

The police department also gave a shoutout to the officers in their post, saying their actions reflect the values of service and dedication that the force stands for. Sometimes, it’s the small acts, like clearing a drain in the middle of a flood that leave the biggest impression.
