A remarkable story of love and compassion across cultural and religious lines has touched hearts nationwide, as 25-year-old Rohana, who was raised by her Chinese foster mother, retired teacher Xu Helan (86), successfully graduated from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) with a Diploma in Computer Science.

Abandoned as an infant at just two months old, Rohana was taken in and nurtured by Xu, who raised her as her own daughter. Their unique mother-daughter bond first gained attention three years ago, when Rohana left home to begin her university studies.
After three years of dedication and hard work, Rohana has now completed her studies with an impressive CGPA of 3.88, becoming one of 3,278 graduates celebrated at UTeM’s 21st Convocation Ceremony, officiated by Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam, who also serves as the university’s Chancellor.

Grateful for love and opportunity
Rohana expressed deep appreciation to her foster mother for years of care and encouragement.
“I am deeply thankful to my mother. Without her, I wouldn’t be who I am today. She has always been my strength and inspiration,” Rohana said.
She also extended gratitude to UTeM’s Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, lecturers, and staff for their trust and support since she enrolled in 2022.

Empowering students through education
Rohana was also a recipient of the UTeM “Golden Child Programme” scholarship, an initiative designed to support academically excellent students from financially challenged backgrounds. The programme helps ensure that deserving students can pursue their education without financial worries.
Her story serves as an inspiring example of how compassion and understanding can bridge differences, and how love, regardless of race or religion, can change a life forever.
