A Malaysian climber, Mohd Khafiz Bachok, has successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak at 8,848.86 metres, marking another proud milestone for the country in global high-altitude mountaineering.

Mohd Khafiz Bachok has successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest (8,848.86m) at 2.25am Nepal time on Monday (May 18) and became one of the few Malaysians who have conquered Mount Everest.

According to expedition organiser AltiPro Adventures, Khafiz reached the summit alongside:

  • Mongolian climber Munkhuu Myagmar
  • Sherpa guides Mingma Dorchi Sherpa (Saila)
  • Karma Gyalje Sherpa

A second summit team followed just 10 minutes later, including Australian climber Jennifer Claire Willis and Nepalese climbers Phunjo Jangmu Lama, Mingma Nurbu Sherpa, and Pastenji Sherpa.

From K2 to Everest

Khafiz’s Everest success is the latest milestone in his already impressive climbing resume.

He has previously summited:

  • K2 (8,611m) – the world’s second-highest and most dangerous peak in Pakistan
  • Manaslu (8,163m) – the eighth-highest mountain in Nepal

While for expedition organiser AltiPro Adventures, this climb marks a major breakthrough as it is their first-ever Everest expedition season.

According to the company, this successful Everest expedition reflects months of preparation, acclimatization, route planning, weather strategy, teamwork, and unwavering perseverance through the challenging high-altitude terrain of the Himalayas.

Before Mohd Khafiz’s climb, Malaysian mountaineer Su Chung Wong successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest on 19 May 2024.
